2025Artist Commission for Hospitality Project Curation, Art Consulting & Design Project Management

Commissioned as part of a broader design initiative for a coastal hospitality project, this installation features original sculptural works by Jenna Barbe, an artist known for transforming recycled surfboard blanks into intricate carvings that explore the duality of human identity and our ecological entanglement with the sea.

Scope included artist sourcing and curation, with an emphasis on identifying a maker whose work could speak to the natural and emotional landscape of the Southern California coast. Led the project through all phases—from curatorial sourcing and design development, concept drawings through client presentations, refinement, fabrication coordination, and installation.

Barbe’s sculptural works—Rock Reef and Kelp Forest—draw deeply from marine ecosystems, echoing the textures and fragility of coral reefs and kelp forests. Through her carving process, Barbe exposes the contrast between the surfboard’s rigid shell and the delicate life forms it holds within—inviting reflection on vulnerability, identity, and resilience. Positioned prominently within the space, the works offer guests a layered narrative experience, fusing psychological insight with a reverence for the ocean’s biodiversity and the material memory of surf culture.
